Technology is changing so fast that we’re being constantly asked to upgrade out devices. So what do we do with the old ones? Discarded electronics already account for 70% of landfill trash in the US.
There are more useful ways to dispose of them. You could always recycle or donate them. But there are also a few great ways to turn them into cash.
1. Sell it online
Two of the most popular selling sites have always been eBay and Craigslist. But if you don’t want to be bothered with posting adds – or paying eBay seller fees – there are other sites that will pay you without the hassle.
NextWorth, Gazelle, and BuyMyTronics are sites that will purchase electronics, for instance smartphones, digital cameras, e-book readers, and even certain calculators. They also accept Mac and Windows laptops, but not desktop PCs. But some are more selective than others; check their approved product lists.
2. Store credit
Some of the big retailers reportedly offer store credit for your old gadgets, such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Radio Shack.
Ask at your local store or go to their websites for details.
Amazon Trade-In is one online retail giant giving you the chance to get rid of a wide variety of unwanted tech products. They pay in Amazon gift cards rather than actual cash, so you could all that store credit. That might be a good option, as Amazon sells about anything you can think of. They will pay the shipping, also.
3. Part it out
You may have the time and nimble fingers to disassemble electronics and sell off the parts. There are plenty of people out there with old gadgets that just need a video card or hard drive. Useful parts such as RAM, drives, video cards, and even empty cases are often in demand. It depends on what you can salvage and what people are willing to pay for. You may have to do a little research to see what parts people are looking for, and what they’re paying.
You have to find the venue that works for you, the right balance of profit and effort. If you’ve got your heart set on the latest iPad, you might just bring the old one along to the store to see what you can get. Middle-men are always looking to make their own profit, so if you want maximum value you better stick to eBay or classified ads. Anything is better than just tossing perfectly good devices into the trash where they become hazardous waste.
